A passport is that official document that identifies you as a citizen of a particular country. It allows you to travel to foreign countries and acts as a pass for getting into a country or exiting from it. This is why it is a serious matter if you encounter a stolen pass port.

Stolen In Your Home Country

Perhaps you have planned an extensive trip abroad and as you are packing you realize your passport is nowhere to be found. This is devastating. Search your house and all previous luggage, however, if you suspect your passport may have been stolen, then you must report it. By reporting it to the proper officials you can red flag it if it’s used, this way no one else can use your documents. This is a very important step in the process of replacing a stolen passport.

Stolen Abroad

If this document is stolen while you are in a foreign country it is very dangerous. The passport allows you entry back into your own country; it also acts as traveling papers to verify that you have permission to be in the country. If you are caught without proper documentation in certain countries you can be arrested and held until the situation is remedied. This is why if you suspect your passport has been stolen you alert officials right away. This will stop anyone from using your passport and will allow you to go about the process of getting a replacement for your stolen passport.

Stay Calm

Staying calm is key to handling the situation correctly. Search all the corners of your house and leave no stone unturned! If you still do not find it, you can report it to the authorities as missing and apply for a new one. If you are in a foreign country and your identification is stolen maybe during a night out, be sure to report it missing as soon as you discover you are no longer in possession of it, and get started on the passport expediting procedure to have the necessary travel documents as soon as possible.

Report It

There are two ways of reporting for it. The first one is by calling the authorities and you can locate contact numbers online. The second way is by going to an agency and filling out the forms that will help in the replacement of the passport. In case you also find the passport of someone, always report it to the authorities or mail it to the relevant agencies.

Invalidation

The authorities can then try to help you track it down. However, you should consider the possibility that it may never turn up. Once you have reported it as stolen, it is invalidated and you cannot use it for travel. You have to apply for another one. Then it is time for a American passport renewal .

Mai tais and Kona lagers. Poke, salmon and rib racks. We sit in the Turtle Bay restaurant rehashing our North Shore days. I had a fun surf at Off the Wall, interviewed Evan Valiere and watched the Gudangs jam with guitars, salad bowls and spoons at the Vans house. Chas, our editor-at-living-large, surfed Kammies in the morning and spent the afternoon at a family barbecue with Eddie and Makuakai Rothman. Chas is in Hawaii gathering material not only for this issue’s story on Eddie and Makuakai [page 88], but also for a book he’s writing about the North Shore. In an effort to become fluent in the subtleties and characters of the area he’s hanging out with the Rothmans and Kai Garcia. At team houses. On the sand. In the water. And now at Lei Lei’s. He’s got a book (and this magazine) to fill. We share our North Shore theories.

The North Shore is diversity. Every November surfers from six continents board planes and converge on this geographically perfect coastline and for six weeks North Shore lineups turn into the PC group photographs you see on any college brochure. White, brown, black, yellow. Aamion and Scooby. Budgeting grom and Bob McKnight. Everyone funneled by the mountains and the ocean onto a thin strip of sand, living shoulder-to-shoulder to compete for waves, money, mates, exposure, photos and points. And respect.

What a clusterf–k, Chas and I agree, halfway through our meal. I order a beer, he a mai tai. How does this whole North Shore engine function? So many people, so many egos.

The North Shore is (its own) Country. We call it “Hawaii” and we call Hawaii the 50th United State, but my God, is that a technicality. The laws that govern the North Shore are not the same ones that govern the mainland. Ride in the back of the truck if you want. Settle an argument with your fists. Have a ball. You will not be hearing from lawyers. The North Shore has its own laws to help maintain its purity, to avoid another Waikiki and to manage the millions of people and dollars that annually pass through (mostly without receipts). The structure and rules, based largely on respect, are understood and apply to everyone. Break the rules and you’ll get punished. But you probably won’t go to jail.

The North Shore is the Wild West. It is Boardwalk Empire. It is North Shore. “When the wave breaks here, don’t be there, or you’re gonna get drilled.” Respect on land, respect in the water. As Hawaiian writer Daniel Ikaika-Ito says during his conversation with Chas [page 72], “the extreme danger of the surf mirrors the repercussions of stepping out of line [on land].”

The North Shore is the ocean. It is Pipeline and Sunset Beach. And it’s around the ocean and these fortuitous reefs that the North Shore bases its culture, economy and judicial system. It all comes down to the ocean, Chas and I decide, finishing our drinks and signing the check. Because if you stripped away the people, team houses, contests, parties, unwritten rules and egos, the waves would still be here and we’d still abide by a set of rules based largely on respect. —Taylor Paul

Recovering from an addiction to prescription drugs is on of the biggest challenges a person can face. Prescribe for pain relief, opiates are highly addictive medications. Detoxing is just the beginning of the fight for anyone addicted to these substances. Once detoxification is complete, drug counseling plays a vital role in treating addiction.

Counseling Approaches

There are many approaches to counseling that can be included in an individual therapy program. Once an individual has completed detox and the poison of the drug is gone from the body, they are ready to begin their treatment plan. Each persons plan is individualized to meet their specific needs. Often, there are several concerns that must be dealt with through treatment that are the result of their addiction.

Therapy

Along with CBT, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, other approaches such as family therapy will be helpful to individuals who are recovering from addiction. In some cases psychotherapy is also used to address mental health issues that may be contributing to the abuse of drugs. Social and psychological issues can be very strong motivators that cause an individual to relapse.

Dependency

Even after the physical dependency to the drug is gone, there is a high probability of relapse. There are certain factors that provide temptations for using again. These factors can be spending time with people who still use, going to a specific area of town, or life stress. Therapy will help individuals learn alternative and appropriate skills for coping without the use of drugs.

Treatment

Treatment plans for individuals with drug addictions utilize several different therapies. There is no particular therapy that is seen as better or more successful than another. Additionally, there is no specific method that is right for every individual. Each person will have their own treatment plan developed with their specific addiction and needs in mind.

Group Therapy

Usually group therapy is preferred to individual therapy sessions. People find support from peers through these group therapy sessions. In addition, they are challenged by their peers. Twelve step programs are very well known resources that are free to those who need it. In this kind of a therapy group the individual will feel comfortable learning from other people in the same situation.

Dual Diagnosis

Individuals who have a dual diagnosis will benefit more from private one on one intensive outpatient services. A dual diagnosis might be the coexistence of a bipolar disorder, depression, or other disorder. When a person is dual diagnosed it is necessary to treat the mental health condition separate from the drug addiction.

You know that one idea you and your buddy always talk about, the one that you bring up every time you have a few sodas and are dreaming big? The one that will never happen because it’s just too damn outrageous? Well, through Red Bull’s new Launchpad you can bring that idea to life.

That Red Bull is a fan of big, bold ideas is nothing new. But now they want to hear yours, and the bigger — the braver —the better. All you need to do is flip that webcam on, pitch your idea, and load it up at the Launchpad site. If enough people like your pitch Red Bull will help bring it to life. (And if they don’t, shit, maybe we’ll pick it up.)

Because this contest is open to everyone it’s important that we flood them with as many surf-related ideas as possible. That’s where you come in. You have an idea for a dream contest? A wild stunt or new adventure? Or maybe a creative invention? Share it. Submit your idea here.
