Instead of ten different places I like to shoot, I am choosing ten photos from one place I like to shoot: Indonesia. These are water shots from a trip during the Kustom Airstrike, with five guys getting two photos each. The air-wind and progressive surfers made for some of the best photos I’ve ever shot on a trip.
Chippa Wilson. On this trip everyone was really blown away by how technical he was. Dudes were almost bummed because he landed so many tech airs.
I really like this photo of Chippa. It makes the wave look like coping for these guys. I’m sure he pulled this too. The guy did not fall this trip.
Clay blew my mind, too. He probably doubled everyone’s wave count out there. He’s a genius and is so interesting to watch.
Clay at one point rewound some of Mitch Coleborn’s flips in BS! and watched him pull that crazy backflip. I swear the next day he went out and pulled the first or second one he tried. There’s nothing he can’t do.
Jay Davies is a big unit. The guy was riding a 5’6” Dwart and going berserk. He wanted that 50g’s so bad that he left the trip in a wheel chair.
Jay pretty much broke his ankle doing the biggest alley oops you’ve ever seen. I can’t comprehend how a guy that big can punt that high. He’s a legend.
What can you say about Josh Kerr? He’s so damn good. From 2-foot beachbreak to slabbing 10-footers, he’s a madman.
Here’s another backside Indy grab. Josh pulled this one and another massive one. No one does backside Indy grabs. He’s next level.
Mitch had a blown knee most of the trip. It’s a bummer because he did some of the biggest backside airs I’ve ever seen. He was so close to nailing that 50 grand. But you’d see his knee give way each time.
Mitch’s style is so mental. Its like Luke Egan and Marzo put together; just so polished. I hope he brings back that massive mustache again too. Mustache ride anyone?

It’s a private beach and the owner frequently drives by and calls the sheriff if he see someone surfing. Do rich people have nothing better to do with their time?
The lefts were barreling.
Brisk offshores made this beach break turn on while the tide was dropping. We would’ve been out there but…
Except this one that I body surfed. That’s Chachi [Ryan Craig] about to take a photo of me. Profile pic.
Nat Young was the lone goofy footer and got any left he wanted.
So were the rights. Here, young Nic Hdez does a pretty cool head floater into the flats. That was fun to watch.
I really love Santa Cruz during this time of year.
Nat in his West Side red wetsuit. Because he’s the pride of the Westside.
This is the last wave Nat caught.
This is why.

We’re always stoked to post family snap shots that turn up little gems of information. Here’s one of those photos, taken back in the summer of 1967 at Old Man’s, San Onofre. Pictured clockwise (closest) Betty VanDyke, Karen Gallagher (Surf Guide fame), Gretchen (mom), Peter VanDyke (sitting), Gene VanDyke (standing), (sitting) Fred VanDyke, and Charles Gallagher. Andy Irons // France
This is my last portrait I ever took of Andy Irons. It’s in France and all he could talk about the whole time we shot was about the arrival of his son, Axel. One of the things I loved about Andy was he always made time for me, especially when I wanted to have a shoot with him. He’d say, “Let’s do this!” and we would be off and running. RIP my friend…
Dusty Payne // California
A serious hack from Dusty Payne last January in Santa Barbara, California.
Mick Fanning // France
Mick “Eugene” Fanning gives me a big cheers the night after he won the Hossegor event. He is one of my all time favorite people on tour. A true gentleman (when he’s not drunk!) who always has his friends’ backs.
Gudauskas Brothers // San Clemente, California
The all-time frothing G-Unit! Dane, Pat and Tanner are “The Ministers of Positive Energy” for the ASP tour. This was shot during the making of a short film I did on them called “G-Unit.”
Dane Reynolds // J-Bay, South Africa
Dane Reynolds in a contemplative lunchtime moment in J-bay.
Kelly Slater // J-Bay, South Africa
Kelly on his way to pack his boards and get the hell out of J-Bay. After it took us 34 hours of travel, losing to a back-ailing Sean Holmes in Round 3, it was time to go home. “It just wasn’t in the cards,” he later said.
Jordy Smith // J-Bay, South Africa
Jordy Smith’s newest mantle piece addition. Jordy, so stoked after his first ASP World Tour win.
Kelly Slater // Puerto Rico
Kelly blowing up in his quarterfinal heat in Puerto Rico. In the foreground is the Hawaiian flag, flying in memory of AI.
Kelly Slater // Puerto Rico
This is Kelly’s version of a 10! Shot the day after his 10th World title win. Thanks for bringing me along K!
Dane Reynolds // Gold Coast Australia
What I love about this image of Dane Reynolds at Snapper Rocks is that it was taken right before his groundbreaking Round 3 performance. It was one of the best-surfed heats I’ve ever witnessed.
